Cozumel -  (Mayan: Island of the Swallows) is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, opposite Playa del Carmen. It is one of the eight municipalities(municipios) of the state of Quintana Roo. Cozumel is a popular tourist destination renowned for its scuba diving. The main town on the island is San Miguel.

The island is about 48 km (30 miles) north-south and 16 km (10 miles) east-west, and is the largest island of Mexico. It is about 20 km (12 miles) from the mainland, and some 60 km (36 miles) south of Cancún. Nearly everybody in Cozumel lives in the town of San Miguel (pop. est. 90,000 in 2003), which is on the western shore. The rest of the island is low, flat, and densely vegetated.

About Mexico

Officially United Mexican States, republic (1995 est. pop. 93,986,000), 753,665 sq mi (1,952,500 sq km), S North America. It borders on the United States in the north, on the Gulf of Mexico (including its arm, the Bay of Campeche) and the Caribbean Sea in the east, on Belize and Guatemala in the southeast, and on the Pacific Ocean in the south and west. Mexico is divided into 31 states and the Federal District, which includes most of the country's capital and largest city, Mexico City.

Land

Most of Mexico is highland or mountainous and less than 15% of the land is arable; about 25% of the country is forested. Most of the Yucatán peninsula and the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in the southeast is lowland, and there are low-lying strips of land along the Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific Ocean, and the Gulf of California

In the south the deserts yield to the broad, shallow lakes of a region, comprising the Valley of Mexico, known as the Anáhuac and famous for its rich cultural heritage. South of the Anáhuac, which includes Mexico City, is a chain of extinct volcanoes, including Citlaltépetl , or Orizaba (18,700 ft/5,700 m, the highest point in Mexico), Popocatépetl , and Iztaccihuatl . To the south are jumbled masses of mountains and the Sierra Madre del Sur.

People

The great majority of the population are of mixed Spanish and indigenous descent and speak Spanish, the official language, as their first language. Various Mayan dialects are also spoken. Since 1920 the population of Mexico has had a very high rate of growth, almost entirely the result of natural increase; from 1940 to 1990 the population grew from 19.6 million to 81.1 million.

 CLIMATE
The average daily air temperature on Cozumel is 80 degrees (27°C). In
July through August, the highs range from the upper 80s to the low
90s. (32°C) In December and January, the daytime temperatures average
in the mid-70s.(24° C.) Winter Months: Cold fronts may create wind,
clouds and some cooler weather through the day, nothing to worry
about, the island is still beautiful with or without a little chill.
Afternoon thunderstorms are common, usually lasting for an hour or so,
nothing to worry about. Water temperatures range from 77°-82°F
(25°-28°C) throughout the year! Divers welcome, it's paradise for you,
 under water or on land
!

 Dress For Cozumel!
When heading to Cozumel, dressing up isn't really something you need
to worry about. You're on vacation, relax. Some places require a bit
of dressing up, such as a polo shirt, but nothing more. If you are
going to arrive in the winter months (December and January) make sure
that you bring a light jacket. When thinking about walking around town
make sure that you are in comfortable shoes, none the less, when
walking around the Mayan ruins it is important you have a good pair of
sneakers to get you through the journey!

Carnaval
Each year, since 1908, Cozumel celebrates Carnaval, the island's
time-honored pre-Lenten festival. In Cozumel, grandparents, adults,
teenagers and children alike come together to participate in the
harmonically colorful and musical explosion. Within the
Mexican-Caribbean, Cozumel displays the most popular and authentic
Carnaval celebration, providing a more traditional and family-oriented
event. Together locals and visitors enjoy five days of fun that
includes parades, floats, traditional regional foods, music and
dancing. The highlight of the festivities is the Comparsas Ball that
features an incredible dance competition, not to be missed!

Restaurants -
Now, there are many different kinds of resaurants to eat at when in
Cozumel there is something for everyone.

For the Party Animal : Carlos 'N Charlies
An out of this world place that makes you really feel like you are on
vacation in Mexico. It's in town on the mall strip and right across
from the beach. Carlos 'N Charlies has good food, but if you're
looking for a place that has some drinks this is the spot. They have a
whole menu of drinks to choose from and different mixed shots that are
really interesting and different from the US. Party and eat up!

For the Italian lover : Guido's
North of the main plaza you'll find this lovely set restaurant, it is
one of our family favorites, Guido's! You can dine in or dine out, out
meaning outside on a beautiful patio with lush greens, it's
beautifully lit to set a relaxed mood. It is truly a beautiful
setting, with an extremely friendly staff. Sangria is an absolute
must, it is amazing! Piacere! (Enjoy!)

For a truly unique Mexican taste: La Choza
Ask anyone in town, and I'm sure in a top 5 restaurant list La Choza
would be in there! So friendly and kind, and very well spoken english
by the staff, it's very easy to communicate! The food is GREAT, a
truly unique experience, a home made yellow salsa  that is amazing
with the crispy chips! You can even take it home by the bottle with
various different sizes (it's great on eggs in the morning and even
better with veggies). They also offer a few different soup, we call it
the "noodle soup" it's noodles with a light tomato tasting broth! So
good, it'll fill you up but it still very light! This is a personal
favorite for my daughter, she has to eat there at least 2 in a one
week stay. Everything on the menu is amazing. La Choza is located on
the corner of Salas and Avenida 10. If you're lucky you'll catch the
traditional Mexican guitar players, they'll play any song! La Choza is
awesome!

For the Night Owls: Las Seras
If you are out having a good time, and are hungry by the time you
leave the discos or clubs, check out this amazing taco place Las
Seras. You'll know you are there when you see a huge BBQ'd pork
outside! The restaurant is only open in the evenings, but is great if
you've had a late day at the beach and wanted to take your time, and
not worrying about dinner. When you order it's a little more difficult
the restaurant is in town and the employees don't speak english, you
can just hold up the number of what you want, and they'll understand!
No worries! Don't miss out, they have amazing salsa and an avocado
sauce that is so good with the simple tacos! An American taco, and
tacos in Cozumel are different they are just a fried tortilla with
meat, onions and cilantro. Depending on what you order at Las Seras
you might get pineapple on it if you order the slivered pork. :) Try
it, you'll want to eat there every night!

For the BEST FOOD IN TOWN: Prima
A family favorite, every-time we are in town we celebrate
Thanksgiving, Birthdays and just regular old get together with friends
and family! The employees are extremely friendly, with well spoken
english! The food is to out of this world! They offer Pizza, Pasta,
Surf & Turf, and Prima has the best desserts known to man kind! Prima
is a two story building offering a restaurant on the top with and open
roof on half of the deck and covered roof on the other half of the
deck with a breeze and is right in the main plaza on the corner. On
the first floor of Prima they offer a cigar bar! Don't miss out on the
best food in Cozumel!!
