MEXICAN SUPERMARKET GIANT PROPOSED

Mexican supermarket giant, Comercial Mexicana, wants to build a new commercial center in downtown Cozumel, said the island's Municipal Government last week. The hyperstore would be located on land by the corner of 11th Street with the seafront.

The federal electricity plant is currently located on that land and the municipality said that various other ideas were also discussed with the company at an urban planning group meeting. Comercial Mexicana will now analyze their options and return to the next meeting, said the authority.

Comercial Mexicana operates stores similar to Wal-Mart in the United States or Carrefour in France. Its parent company is CCM, a Mexican retail group part-owned by CostCo.
