The API is considering to build alternate piers for the service of the ferries and independent tourist vessels that today leave from the downtown ferry pier. The construction of the new passenger terminal of Cozumel is in the phase of bidding to decide the construction company that will execute the work.

The terminal of the Muelle San Miguel of Cozumel is the pier of coastal traffic specialized in the movement of people in which the major shuttle passengers flow from all the mainland.

More than 6 thousand people every day make the crossing between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen, a figure that is increased in a notable way during the vacation periods.

The fiscal Muelle San Miguel has turned out to be besides the most solid harbor structure of the island, being the only pier that was left almost unharmed from the onslaught of "Wilma" and because of it became the "umbilical cord" of Cozumel during the hardest days of its recovery.

Now, in a first phase, the API will invest more than 28 million pesos in the project of construction of a new passenger terminal.

It will be a two-floor building and of more than 1,200 square meters of extension, and in this installation there will be all types of comforts for the people, that today lack even spaces to sit down. The project already is approved and defined, for which now only is sought the construction business that will execute it.

Among others things, this new installation will take into account the construction of alternate piers for boats in the south side of the fiscal pier, toward the terrace of the flag, something that will respond to a mature demand of the boatmen that work removing trips of tourism on the ferry pier.

These people, mostly, are small businessmen that with their own boats try to compete for the market of the tourism that arrives at Cozumel and that now will have a more worthy space to exercise their work.
