Beach & Sand in Cozumel

The operation of dredging sand in Cozumel is basically a whim of the municipal president who besides passes over several rules that prohibit the creation of artificial beaches in the protected southern areas of the island, for what he want that material to be extracted, denounced ecologists.

The rules of environmental management of the Marine Park and the General Law of the ecological balance, as well as the local plan of codes of the island of Cozumel, prohibit that artificial beaches of sand in those places be established where they do not exist naturally, above all in the coast of the park, that goes from Puerta Maya terminal in the west, to Punta Chiqueros in the eastern face of the island.

Guadalupe Alvarez Chulim, president of the Cozumeleño ecologist group, Sky, Land and Sea (Citymar), denounced the previous thing before the announcement on the part of the municipal government that already has ready the machines to try to carry out once more the operation of dredging sand in which Gustavo Ortega has tried more than one year, and up to now without positive results for anybody.

The environmentalist questioned the fact that the permission that City Hall says to have, is for a "pilot test" and he speaks of other places of extraction and final deposit of the material, different to the ones that in the facts they have been used.

"The pilot test already failed, two dredges sank and the public money was lost in payments to the previous businesses as deposits and has not been returned", the environmentalist said, who criticized that even those devistating results can dissuade mayor of Cozumel from a project that once more is considered "a whim".

Recalling besides that the permission of the "pilot test" speaks to inject the sand in the beaches of the hotels Playa Azul and Cozumeleño, in the north of the island, and not for the hotel El Presidente, the Windham and El Cid, the ones that Gustavo Ortega wants to have delivered to knowing that they are found in areas where to build artificial beaches is prohibited".

It mentioned that artificial beaches as those of the hotel Presidente, main proposed "client" of the City Hall Cozumeleño were built in the 70's, when no Marine Park existed neither its plan of management that, today no matter how it read prohíbits this action.

It criticized also in public, that Gustavo Ortega affirms he wants to create north of Cozumel a new protected natural area and that in fact ordered the dredging and destruction of the north sandbanks, where important species reproduce themselves, such as the pink conch.
