Nightlife and renewed Downtown Cozumel!

With the strategy "Cozumel Downtown" they expect the return of the dynamism of the nightlife of the tourist zone of the city, crestfallen since the creation of commercial plazas that caused the first migration and disappearance of the main nocturnal centers of the island, a situation that combined with the departure of the cruisers barely around sunset and the expansion of the concept "all inclusive" in Hotels.

Between 1995 and the 2001, Cozumel had an active nightlife that included several large discos, bars, nocturnal centers, business of franchise, coffee houses and elegant places to have dinner that regularly were full and at times, until was difficult to find a place.

The activity decayed in great measured with the combination of a series of factors that derived in which at present is a modest night-owl activity in the island, which takes refuge now in a handful of bars and "lounges", where in a good evening, they barely have full tables.

What remains are the chain businesses and a disco of old prestige, although now it is a lot smaller, in which they have capacity for more people and in general they see good activity, although not to a point of comparison with what occurred at the beginning of the decade.

A similar thing occurred to the commerce and could be seen in the jewelry stores and all other types of other stores that were open in the past until ten at night and at times a lot later. There were people at all hours walking the main avenue and the coffee houses and restaurants of the center lit up full in the good seasons.

The reason of this good activity was that the cruisers remained in the island until late; setting sail on the average late at night; while some even remained to spend all the night in the island, injecting some 1500 people at least by ship to the nocturnal economy of Cozumel.

The prosperity decayed since before the attack of September 11 in the United States, as already a decline was seen since the 2000, but this was accentuated after the attacks to that country that derived in an economic crisis and deterioration of confidence everywhere, which modified the mentality of leaders of many businesses, including the cruisers.

Now, the ships leave the island barely at sunset, between five and seven in the afternoon; some five times in the year a cruiser has remained until nine at night and a pair of ships of medium size spent the night during the high season, from November to April, although in all the cases, the activity was better than when they go all leave early, as has become the norm.

To try to revert this tendency, the project will be implemented again "Downtown Cozumel" (Cozumel Central) that expects to attract more tourism to the zone; they were going to inaugurate it Friday, but as in the baseball, it was suspended for rain.
