Oasis Cruise Ship coming to Cozumel

It will be in May 2010 when the first trips to arrive at the island of Cozumel of the ones that will be the largest civil ships ever built, which is known from now that will carry the name of "Oasis of the Sea", whose captain already visited the island to know the terminals, infrastructure that is being adapted to receive to these ships.

The SSA Mexico terminal is the first one that has done those changes and now has the necessary length to receive the ship, that according to available information, would make it’s first trip to the island of Cozumel in the first quarter of 2010 after the 2009 delivery from the Finnish shipyards that at present build it.

Nevertheless, due to the width of the ships, above all in their upper part, pertaining to the superstructure (the "buildings" that pass from the level of the gunwale), it will be necessary to utilize some special defenses in the terminals, that will be large structures of solid rubber and reinforcement that would measure at least two and half a meters wide.

Utilizing those defenses, a pier as the SSA would be able to receive at the same time a ship of the current class Freedom, -considered today the largest of the world, and the Oasis of the Sea, whose future captain spent a few days in Cozumel with his family last month with the objective of knowing the port and its installations.

Another adaptation that must be done and at present is studied by the API, is the utilization of tug boats to maneuver these ships in the island port, since due to its size this service would do necessary, that in spite of all, the SCT considers "optional". These tug boats besides would be of the "fireman" type with capacity to fight a possible fire in some of the ships that arrive at the island.

The power of the propellers of these ships of more than 220 thousand tons of displacement, represents also a risk for the coral reefs and in general the marine life of the floor close to the terminals, by the turmoil of sand that can raised under the surface of the water, which makes more necessary the tug boats.

The Genesis class will surpass the Freedom class, to which belongs the Freedom and the Liberty of the Seas, considered for the present the largest cruisers of the world. These ships will surpass length by 21 meters, 8.5 meters wider, and greater penetration and a gross tonnage that expects be 43 percent greater.
